The food sector has always carried both creativity and art and social media influencers and viral food videos have contributed a lot in marketing certain food brands.

As we’ve seen many food trends taking over the food sector in 2022, especially with TikTok trends that became widespread in the whole world and even adopted by the most famous chefs and food bloggers, food lovers continue to be creative with offering different combinations and tastes to food lovers.

2023 will be no different and we will continue to see a variety of trends, some of them might be unexpected but you have to be aware that these trends affect your business’ figures.

The bottom line, some of these trends are worth the investment and you can refer to food statistics to identify the most popular ones.

What are the food trends to shape 2023?

Food for everyone

Vegetarianism was the only popular dietary restriction, but nowadays we hear different restrictions becoming trendy and acknowledged by restaurants and even fast-food chains. Vegan, dairy free, plant-based, and farm-bred became so common in the food sector and in restaurants.

Burger King, Starbucks, Taco Bell, and many other fast-food restaurants have offered vegan options for their customers knowing that only around 2% of the population is vegan

But on the parallel side, sales of real meat were rising in 2022 so people are heading more towards farmed meat as part of a balanced diet knowing the health benefits of real meat.

Cultivated meat,  which is genuine animal meat produced by cultivating animal cells directly, is becoming a hit as awareness of it is rising in numerous markets.

Everything Board

Boring has become the regular charcuterie board in 2022 with a beautiful display of cheese and cold cuts. Now, the board is hitting a new era with butter boards that became a TikTok viral toward the last few months of 2022. But, it’s not the end of the board era in 2023.

Butter board

We will continue to see different boards from Hummus board to labneh board, yogurt and jam boards and even chocolate spread board with assorted vegetables or fruits and crackers.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants for instance adopted the butter boards for the holidays as their signature holiday platter.

International cuisine

Again, thanks to social media and food bloggers that travel the world and bring us flavors from around the world, people became more interested and intrigued to try new exotic flavors. Korean and Vietnamese dishes for instance are very popular as well as Mexican and Cuban cuisine which is a combination of spicy and sweet flavors.

Millennials like to experiment with new flavors from different countries. Many would travel to learn about food habits and new tastes of a certain country as it forms an important part of their culture.

 Birria tacos

Have you ever seen those famous Instagram and TikTok videos that show chefs dipping tacos in a rich sauce and adding salsa and guacamole to it?

The popularity of Birria Tacos is increasing and it’s a saucier and richer version of regular tacos. It’s originally made of goat meat, but restaurants make it mostly with beef and recently mushrooms.

If you haven’t heard of them, you will probably hear and taste them very soon.

Cherry tomatoes & garlic dishes with balsamic glaze

With or without any cheese, the oven-baked garlic along with cherry tomatoes and balsamic vinegar is ranking at the top of viral food trends that are good for all occasions from regular family meals to friends gatherings and parties.

It goes really well with pizzas, pasta, boards, avocado toasts, canapés, and much more. You can even have it in a sandwich for lunch or dinner.

Mushrooms

The plant based superfood that is a great meat replacement is a welcome trend in the restaurant business.

It has a variety of kinds and it’s used in many dishes of soups, appetizers, salads or main dishes. They are also served baked with garlic on toast.

Mushrooms have a place on the menu of 80% of restaurants including QSR and they will continue to be popular due to consumers’ demand and versatility of their use.

Non-alcoholic beverages

Shockingly yes! More people are considering new approaches or alternatives to going out and drinking for different reasons, most importantly their health and letting go of bad habits.

Virgin cocktails are taking a new hit even in non-Islamic countries and bartenders are experimenting with creating 0% alcohol beverages for clients. Search for non-alcoholic drinks continues to grow 22% yearly, reflecting the changing consumer habits.

These are some of the trendiest foods that are likely to be very popular in 2023. So, be ready for some changes in your menu to adapt to the market’s demand and preferences.
